THE TSUTE YANG SCHOLARSHIP

To honor an educator and a wonderful human being who passed away on February 17, 2010

Dr. Tsute Yang passed gently from this life after a long illness but a full and accomplished life. Born in Yangzhou, China, he is still known there for how he excelled in his academic studies. He graduated in 1938 from Jiao Tung University in Shanghai. Through a national exam for students to study overseas, he received a fellowship to complete a Master's Degree at Harvard University in 1947.

He then had a dedicated career as a university professor of Electrical Engineering, which included teaching at the University of Toledo, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, University of Washington, Clemson University, and Villanova University (serving the last as department chair). In 1963, while working full-time in the early mainframe computer industry, he completed his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. He is known to his many students for his skill and capacity in teaching as well as his kindness in supporting the overall experience of his students' lives.

His life-long interests included outdoor gardening, Chinese calligraphy, improving the usefulness of Chinese-English dictionaries, and an extensive US and international stamp collection. Dr. Yang is survived by his wife of 68 years, his two sons and their families, and the families of his brother and sisters in China, who will all carry on his presence into the rest of their lives.
